"The purpose of the Area Agency on Aging is to support older adults so they can maintain the highest possible quality of life with independence and dignity, and to assist seniors and their family members with the many challenges of the aging process. The Area Agency on Aging acts as the first resource you can turn to for help."
During this rotation, I was able to spend 4 days observing and participating in the Senior Nutrition Program for PG County Department of Aging. I was able to shadow the Program Manager for the Department of Family Services Aging Services Division. It enabled me to see not only the role of the dietitian in community aging, but also the role of an RD director and observe managerial duties.
Experiences during this rotation include:
- Develop nutrition promotional material on the health benefits of green tea.
- Participate in kitchen inspection and lunch delivery at senior meal site.
- Conducted presentation on the importance of proper hand washing techniques in preventing illness during flu season at senior meal site.
- Observed organization, meal planning, budgeting, financial planning and managerial duties including staff and volunteer issues.
- Conducted satisfaction survey phone calls with seniors.
- Attended meetings with families who had concerns about their loved ones to develop the best plan of care.
